Visual Arts Classes

Throwing on the wheel

Throwing on the wheel (All Thursday evenings), Sept. 6, 13, 20, Oct 4, 11, 18, Nov. 1, 8, 15, 29 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Dec. 6 flex date – in case of cancelling one of the above classes. Dec. 6 last bisque firing before Christmas Dec. 13 last glaze firing before Christmas. Member $140, Non-Member $180. All skill levels are welcome.  Student’s requests will determine topics.  Potential topics may include throwing cylinders, bowls, plates, and lids.  Hand building and extrusions may also be covered.  You may also work on your own projects.

Clay may be purchased from the Art Center. Cost is $45 for a 25 lb bag of fresh clay. Cost is $15 for a 10 lb bag of recycled clay. The cost of clay covers all glazing and firing costs and studio time. You may share a bag of clay. Some used tools are available to use in the studio.  A new tool kit may be purchased from the Art Center.  Cost is $10. You will get dusty and dirty during the class.  Barney suggests you bring either a full-size apron or an old beach-sized towel.

You may use the studio outside of class during normal Art Center hours. Instructor will usually be available for open studio hours most Saturdays from 1 – 3 pm. Instructor: Barney Smith

Ceramic Surface Design

Ceramic Surface Design: From functional to fantastic. September 15, 9am to 1pm (clay creation) and September 22, 9am to 12pm (glazing). Member $49, Non-member $63. Supply fee $ 10.00. Ages 16 & up. From beginner to “seasoned” students will learn how to give a simple handbuilt form spectacular appeal by using carving as the primary surface design technique. Using both organic and industrial design as inspiration, vases, cups and bowls will go from functional ware to pieces of true art. Students should wear aprons or wear clothing that can get stained. Tuesday AM Pottery Studio

Tuesday AM Pottery Studio starting September 18th, is a perfect time to rethink the pottery skills that you have and share time with others who enjoy clay. Come in to refresh and expand skills (new and old). Never worked in clay before?…then stop in Tuesday at 10:00am to noon (and bring a friend) to see what ceramics is all about. Your first time in Studio, Dianne will give you clay and guide you through making an item of your choice. If you are new to clay and think this might be something you enjoy, then join the Retired Clay Class for instruction.  It will be necessary to purchase your clay to make other pieces. PCA has all the underglazes, glazes and kilns to get your project ready to use and display. PCA can supply everything you need to complete your projects for yourself and gifts.

Retired?….but not tired? Clay, handbuilding

Retired?….but not tired? Clay, handbuilding. Tuesdays 10:30am to 12:00pm starting Sept. 25th through Oct. 30th. Sign up for all six class times for $60 Member/ $70 Non-Member or $15 per class time. This is a class for those that have time, energy, and a wish to try something different! And it really is something most people can do successfully – handbuilding in clay. If you can handle pie crust, then handbuilding will work for you. Dianne will guide you through 6 weeks of clay projects, with time to add and complete some of your own projects. You do not have to be retired to take this class. Class tuition covers instruction, and clay fees will be $2 per pound or people can split a 25# block of clay and its cost. Glazing Oct. 30th. Dianne will demo formation topics using molds to support your clay as well as decoration using impressions tools, underglazes for color, and later glazes. Instructor: Dianne Lockerby

Fused Glass pendants or window catchers

Fused Glass pendants or window catchers Saturday Oct. 6thth, 1-3 pm. Member $14, Non-Member $18, supply fee $18. Join us to learn about glass fusing, and have fun creating several fused glass items.  Participants will be able to create 5 unique pieces of art that can be made into pendants, or 3 window catcher/ornament sized items.  We’ll use fusible glass, confetti, hand pulled stringers, and dichroic glass. We'll also learn how to do some basic cutting of glass and how firing to different temperatures will produce different effects.  No previous experience is necessary. The class is open to ages 7 and up (ages 7-9 should have an adult to stay to help). The items will be ready for pick up in 1 week. Instructor: Dale Brown

Still not tired? Try Throwing on the wheel. Tuesdays 1:00pm to 2:30pm, starting Oct. 16 through November 20th. Glazing November 20th. Sign up for all six class times for $60 Member/ $70 Non-Member or $15 per class time. This is a class for those that have time, energy, and a wish to try something different! This is a beginning class and Dianne will guide you through each step of throwing. Patience and practice is required, and first pieces will be small. Experience leads to larger pots once the basics are mastered. Dianne will guide you through 6 weeks of clay projects, with time to add and complete some of your own projects. Dianne will demo formation topics to support your clay as well as decoration using impressions tools, underglazes for color, and later glazes. Whether you feel artistic or not, clay is not that hard, and people remark that working in clay ‘is good therapy’. Clay fees will be $2 per pound or people can split a 25# bag of clay $45. Raku firing November 3rd

Raku Pottery glazing and firing November 3rd 8:30am, Member $55/ Non-Member $60, Raku clay 5# for $10, or 10# for $20, or 25# for $45. Students can make their pieces on their own or join us in the pottery studio TBD at the Paradise Center for the Arts for a make it class. Pieces will need to be dry, and put on the PCA shelves to be bisque fired by date TBD. The Raku firing will take place at Lockerby Sheet Metal Nov. 3rd 8:30am to 4pm. The clay pots & sculpture will be loaded in the raku kiln at Lockerby Sheet Metal, kiln temps are rapidly increased to 1800-1900 Degrees F. Once the glazes melt & smooth out, the pieces are individually removed from the kiln. Pieces are placed in a can filled with combustible materials and the hot pot causes the combustibles to flame. A tight-fitting lid placed on the can smothers those flames and the resulting smoke can cause colors to appear on the pots. Students will leave with their finished glazed pieces. All ages are welcomed. Tuition includes one open pottery studio date, the Raku glazing and firing. Scholarships are available for children. Children 14 & under will need adult supervision Nov. 3rd. Class size is limited to 12 students so get registered early.

Paint a Portrait of your Pet with artist Julie Fakler

Paint a Portrait of your Pet with artist Julie Fakler (ages 7 & up, ages 6 & under will need an adult helper) November 8, 5-7pm. Member $14.00/Non-Member $18.00. Artist Julie Fakler will teach you step by step on how to paint a portrait of your pet. In class you’ll learn about under painting, form, shape and color. Bring a photo of your pet to class. If you don’t have a pet, don’t worry. Photos of pets will be available. Wear clothes that can get paint on them. Supply fee $10.00 per student. Instructor: Julie Fakler

Holiday Plates

Holiday Plates Saturdays,   November 10 and 17, 9:30-11 AM. Member $35, Non-Member $41, tuition includes 1 parent with child, extra children cost $20 per child. Join us as we create some Holiday gifts in the Clay Studio, fun parent/child classes or unaccompanied child 8 or older.  Whether you are new to clay or a returning student, we have something for all ages and skill levels.  Wear clothes to get dirty! Students will receive a large slab of clay from which they can make Holiday dishes.  Dianne will show them how to cut, form and decorate their dish(es).  Depending on the sizes of their pieces, it is possible to make several.  (Extra clay can be purchased to make more.)  During the first class pieces will be shaped and some décor can be added.  In the second class we will add color, painting designs, phrases (Cookies for Santa, Grandma’s cookies …) and then glazing.  All pieces will be safe for food when finished, and will be ready for pickup by Thursday, December 20. Family Fun Art projects for ages 3 & up. Nov. 10 1-3pm. Drop in and create artwork with your family! No registration required. Create a planned project or create your own masterpiece. Art supplies will include paint, glitter, glue, collage materials, rubber stamps, markers, pencils, colored pencils, and more. $3.00 per person with a maximum of $10.00 for a family

Clay angels, Santa, trees, bells and ornaments Saturdays December 1, 8, and 15 9:30-11 AM. Member $45.50, Non-Member $54.50, tuition includes 1 parent with child, extra children cost $20 per child. Join us as we create some Holiday gifts in the Clay Studio – fun parent/child classes or unaccompanied child 8 or older.  Whether you are new to clay or a returning student, we have something for all ages and skill levels.  Wear clothes to get dirty! Dianne will guide students through several project choices from which they may choose.  The first 2 classes will be spent creating pieces and adding some color.  The final class will be adding color thru the use of underglazes and glazes. Paradise Center for the Arts Children’s Theatre Season
Paradise will offer 3 different children's theatre camps. Camps, and performances will provide high quality arts experiences for students/actors through the process of learning acting skills, actor and audience etiquette, and most importantly having FUN! Child's Play Theatre's Andrew Velishek will instruct, and direct the three camps/productions.

Acting Fun for Little Ones 6 Saturdays Feb. 10, 17, 24, March 3, 10, 17, 10:00am - 11:30am classes with a performance on March 17 at 11 AM. Tuition $75, scholarships are available. Acting Fun for Little Ones is an introduction to acting, theater and using your imagination. Over the course of the class, kids will participate in a variety of acting games, art activities and rehearsal of a selected group of Aesop's Fables. A final performance of the kids’ rendition of Aesop's Fables will be performed on the final day of class starting at 11 AM. Family and Friends are encouraged to join us for the performance!
Ticket prices for March 17th performance: Adult $5/student $3.

Disney’s Lion King Jr. 3 weeks of rehearsals, July 30 - August 17 (M-F) from 8:00am-12:00pm, 3 shows Friday August 17 at 7:00pm, Saturday August 18 at 1:00pm and 7:00pm. Tuition $85, scholarships are available. Ages 7 and up. Disney’s The Lion King has captivated the imagination of audiences around the world. The African Savannah comes to life on the Paradise Center for the Arts stage with Simba, Rafiki, and an unforgettable cast of characters that journey from Pride Rock to the jungle... and back again, in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. Everyone has a role to play in this great tale. The show has 17 main speaking/singing roles with additional ensemble roles. There are additional opportunities for kids who are interested in learning about lighting, sound design, and backstage management. Auditions July 9 and 10 4:00pm-6:00pm. Ticket Prices: Adult $10/student $5.

The Nutcracker Prince
Rehearsal/Class Saturdays October 6, 13, 27, November 3, 10, December 1 (everyone 2-4pm), Dec. 2nd final dress rehearsal before 2pm show, performances Sunday December 2 at 2:00pm & 4:00pm.
Kindergarten and up 2:00pm-3:00pm rehearsals, 5th grade and up 3:00pm-4:00pm rehearsals. Some rehearsals may overlap. Tuition $75.00, scholarships are available.The Nutcracker Prince production will have 2 public performances. Ticket prices: adult $7, students $3.

Clara's dream unfolds as Christmas Eve arrives. Uncle Drosselmeyer gives Fritz some toy soldiers and Clara a wooden Nutcracker. When Clara kisses the Nutcracker goodnight, little does she know that she has released her prince from his spell! As Clara dreams something amazing is happening! Rat King and his rowdy band of mice arrive to battle the Nutcracker Prince and his loyal Toy Soldiers. Everyone gets into the act when the audience helps Clara's Dolls and the Toy Soldiers trick the Rat King! At last the Nutcracker Prince defeats the Rat King freeing the house from his tyranny.

This show will have two separate parts of the cast. Older students (grades 5 and up) will play the largest speaking roles. Smaller roles will be designated to the younger or less experienced actors (Kindergarten and up.) An informal audition will be held on the first day of class to designate these parts to everyone who registers to be part of the show. NO AUDITION PACKET will be available ahead of time.

Older student roles will include: Clara (48 lines,) Fritz (21 lines,) Drosselmeyer (21 lines,) Rat King (23 lines,) Nutcracker Prince (27 lines,) StoryTellers (anywhere from 20-30 lines.)
Younger students will have anywhere from 2-4 lines and play characters like: Mother, Father, Cats, Clara's dolls, Mice, Toy Soldiers, Sugar Plum Fairies, Snowflakes and Flowers.
Join us for a timeless Christmas classic story!

Rehearsal Dates: Oct. 6, 13, 27, Nov. 3, 10 and Dec. 1. Performances for the public on Dec. 2 at 2:00pm & 4:00pm.
